Topics Covered in this Edition:
Shop No Longer Open on Fridays. The shop will no longer be open on Fridays. In the near future, we will post a revised schedule on the SBK website that includes one or two additional shifts that better accommodate the needs of local bicycling community. The shop will continue to be open from 6-9PM on Wednesdays and 10-6PM on Saturdays.
The SBK will be Televised. Rebecca Markussen and Scott Beardsley appeared on the Cable Access Channel 17 progress talk show, Soapbox Sacramento, which is hosted by Ken Adams. During the thirty minute show, the two SBK Board Members discussed with Ken how the Kitchen got started, its purpose, and how to become involved. The benefits of bicycling and bike commuting were also addressed. Check back at the SBK homepage for a link to the video.
SBK Connects with Oak Park Community at Family Health Fair. The SBK staffed an informational table at the Ulezi Family Health Fair, which took place in McClatchy Park in Oak Park. Despite the extreme heat, Rebecca Markussen and Owen Howlett were able to converse with many people about the purpose of the Kitchen and invite them to stop by to work on their bikes. Owen brought a run down Giant mountain bike, tools, parts, and a bike stand to the Fair so that he and Rebecca could rehab the bike as a demo. Between the two of them, the bike was nearly ready to sell by the end of the day. Look for our new “Repair to Sell” section of the SBK website which provides a photo, description, and price of bicycles that staff and volunteers have brought back into excellent working order and are offering for purchase.
Learning the Basics of Wrenching. On July 25, Jill McDonald, Corey, Sage, Blaine, and Tad taught the SBK’s first basic maintenance course at the shop. Five participants learned how to change a flat tire, adjust their brakes and derailers, and clean a bike’s drive train. Due to the enthusiasm of the instructors and trainees, a second Basic Maintenance course will be held on August 22 from 6-8PM. Contact Gina to register for this class. The cost of each course is $20 for non-members or free to annual members.
Musicians Perform to Raise Money for Kitchen. Chris Dougherty and Rebecca Markussen represented the SBK at a fundraiser for the Kitchen at Luna’s Café, located at 16th and S Streets in Sacramento. The event was hosted by Artists United for Peace. Attendees were lulled by the three musical talents, including Bob Overby. A second fundraiser will take place this fall at the Café. Keep an eye out for the date and time of this important and fun way to financially support your SBK.
SBK Membership Pays Big Time. Whip your bike back into running order over the course of a day as a Daily Member for only $5. Get more bang for your buck as a Monthly Member for just $20, which is $40 less than you would pay as a Daily Member. Drastically increase your savings by becoming an Annual Member and receive more perks! For a $100 annual membership, attend all SBK courses for free for one year and use the shop anytime we are open. This represents a savings of $120 over paying twelve monthly memberships. The more you invest, the more you get and the less you pay.
Four Truck Loads of Goodies. A huge thanks to Lloyd Hammond for generously donating to the SBK inventory from his old bike shop. These parts and accessories will help the Kitchen to offset our expenses during the next months while continuing to provide services to the public. This is just the latest of a long series of quality donations to the Kitchen in the form of parts, time, and money. Thank you for embracing the SBK. These gifts allow us to continue helping cyclists to learn how to keep their bikes on the road!
Hear Ooohs and Ahhs while Rollin’ at Burning Man. The SBK is offering one more evening work session in August for anyone wanting to build a bike to ride at Burning Man. Stop by the shop on Saturday, August 19 and we can help you fix up your ride.
Cyclocross Fever. Does the idea of riding a road bike with knobby tires over a course spark your interest? We are offering a Cyclocross Bike Making Workshop on Saturday, September 10 at the shop. You can take your new bike out for a spin at the start of cyclocross season. Contact Chris Dougherty for the time of and to register for the Workshop.
Watch a Flicker Show with Fellow Cyclists. Don’t miss an outdoor showing of “Pure Sweet Hell” and a surprise film in the yard behind the shop on Friday, September 1. The show will start at dusk. Pure Sweet Hell is a film about cyclocross. You are welcome to BYOB. $5+ donations are requested to financially support shop operations.
Tell us your Interest, We can Find a Way for you to Help. If you are a shop monkey, we can always use help repairing donated bikes to sell. We also could use people with talent in accounting, media relations, community outreach, and website management; to name a few. Contact Gina to become a volunteer.
Your Financial Generosity Becomes Our Rent Money. As a fledging organization, the SBK relies heavily on donations from bicyclists like you. We supplement your funding by our Repair to Sell bike program, but this operation is just getting rolling. Invest in the SBK’s mission and contribution to the community that we share.
The shop is open two days a week: Wednesdays 6-9PM and Saturdays 10AM-6PM (new day(s) to be added soon!) Staff is on hand during these shifts to assist you with bicycle repairs. The shop is located at 2837 36th Street Suite 1, Sacramento, CA 95817. www.sacbikekitchen.org
