SBK AIDS/LifeCycle team pancake breakfast at Bicycle Chef!

As many of you know, a handful of SBK volunteers are busy raising funds for this June’s AIDS/LifeCycle ride — a 545 mile, 7 day ride from San Francisco down the coast to Los Angeles to benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. To help them with their fundraising, Tweed Ride organizer Rick Houston and Bicycle Chef owner and bicycle chef Christopher Davis-Murai are teaming up to throw a pancake breakfast!

$5 plates loaded with pancakes and bacon will be on offer, and since all of the proceeds are going to the SBK ALC team, you’ll be supporting the local guys and helping fund your favorite local non-profit’s favorite big city non-profit. So come on down to Bicycle Chef at 3184 N Street on Sunday, May 23rd, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am and load up on carbs so you can take advantage of May’s wonderful cycling weather. The team has already raised over $18,000, but they’re still a long way from their goal, so come on down and find an altruistic use for your appetite!

Bike Month Rap

Access Sacramento created a public service announcement to promote May is Bike Month, and they were kind enough to include a reference to our humble little shop!

Muchos gracias to the March-April ’10 Digital Basics Class for the shout-out, and we hope Access Sacramento is having as great a bike month as we are!

Hunt the Grid II – Sponsors

Here is a list of the HtG2 sponsors. These folks have all contributed prizes to the event. Because of that they are cool and when you visit them you should tell them how much you appreciate their contributions to SBK and the Sacramento cycling and DIY scene.

Also, the folks at Downtown Grid kicked down a crapton of gift certificates including:

Visit downtowngrid.com

All we can say is DAAAAAAANG (and Thank You for the support)!

Just a reminder… Before you come out today to participate in HtG2 you should check out this HOWTO. If you need to get your bike fixed before the ride we will be open in 1 hour (noon) and stay open until 4pm (our regular hours).

Also, don’t forget to stick around after the hunt. We are having some sweet-ass bands spitting out the lyrics like a viper’s venom. Or something like that. Tonight we have a rocking Clan Dyken, Sizzle, and Thomas Spellman. It will be a day and night to remember. You’ll tell your grandkids about this one. I remember back in the early teens…

Hunt the Grid II – How To

The Bicycle Kitchen gnomes have been working frantically to get this year’s scavenger hunt all ready to go, and everything’s just about ready. If you’re planning on participating, here’s what you’re going to need to know:

  • The registration desk will open at 1:15 PM in front of the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen at 1915 I Street. All teams have to register and pay the participation fee ($10 per person; cash or check only) before they can play. Pre-registered teams already have their slots reserved, and we’re only allowing up to fifty (50) teams to participate.
  • At registration, every player will be given a little tag with their team number on it. Like last year, this tag can be redeemed for one beer at our Second Saturday party (starting 6:00 PM), provided the participant is of legal drinking age. Bring ID — we card!
  • We’ll go over the specific rules of the scavenger hunt and clean up the last details around 2:00 PM, and the hunt should begin shortly after. Hunters should expect to be in around 5:00 PM, and we will announce the winners as soon as possible.
  • Teams will need to bring some way to safely carry small items around on their bicycles (such as a backpack, a basket, or a purse) and a digital camera or camera-enabled cellular phone.
  • You do not have to have a bicycle to participate, but unless you’re an Olympic level distance runner, you’re not going to do very well without one.
  • Teams must obey traffic rules while on the hunt. There will be a fair amount of vehicle traffic in midtown and downtown, so act accordingly.
  • Because you’ll be riding your bike on a warm sunny day, please take measures to avoid sunburn, heat stroke, and dehydration.

I think that about covers it. Pre-registration is closed, but there is still room for a few more teams, so come down early on Saturday to reserve your spot. Happy hunting, and we’ll see you tomorrow!
