We’ve featured some of Sacramento’s best rock, Americana, and hip hop at our Second Saturday parties, but this month, we wanted to bring in a sample of our town’s vibrant and innovative jazz scene.

That’s why this month, we’re proud to welcome Tyson Graf, Chris Brawley, and we’re topping it off with the debut of the all-new Joe Carlson Trio, all on our makeshift stage! And since we’re mixing up the music, we’re going to mix up our drink selections, too. We’ll have the usual beer, but OneSpeed is going to top up your glasses with some wonderful wine, and Two Rivers is kicking in some of their award winning hard cider! What more could you want?

Bike Swap at Fremont Park

Our last bike swap was many miles and many months ago, so when we heard the Friends of Fremont Park wanted to start one up, we jumped at the chance. So for all of you looking to wheel and deal (pun definitely intended), come on down to Fremont Park (16th and P Streets) on Saturday, April 10, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Buy, sell, and browse bikes, new and used parts, and vintage clothing, or just come on by to hang out and see what surfaces. SBK will be there with our mobile fixery, some bikes and T-shirts for sale, and a selection of our higher end parts as well!

A limited number of 10′ x 10′ or 10′ x 20′ booths are available for reservation; register yours at the Friends of Fremont Park website! Proceeds from booth reservations will benefit both SBK and the Friends of Fremont Park.

Willie Weir: One More Show

With his REI shows selling out, Willie Weir, author, storyteller, and actor extraordinaire (oh, and bicyclist, too), has decided to add one more show, here at your friendly neighborhood bicycle maintenance co-operative!

If you missed it last autumn or last Tuesday, you can come on down this Saturday night, February 20, at 7:00 pm to see his one-man show “A Frugal Cyclist’s Guide to the Universe.” As before, the ticket sales will benefit three bicycle-based nonprofits (including the Bicycle Kitchen). The admission fee will be $10, tickets are first-come, first-serve, and we’re going to try to cram as many seats into our shop as we can.

Willie Weir returns to Sacramento

Last autumn, REI Sacramento on Exposition Boulevard played host to noted author, journalist, raconteur, and bicyclist Willie Weir, for his one-man show “A Frugal Cyclist’s Guide to the Universe.” The show sold out quickly, and Willie agreed to come back for an encore and even added two more events to the list!

What’s more, he’s decided to donate the ticket sales and a portion of his book sales on these three nights to three local non-profits: the Mustard Seed Spin, the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, and us, your friendly neighborhood non-profit tool and maintenance collective.

Admission fee is $10 for each show, and you can reserve a seat at the show of your choice by calling REI Customer Service @ 916-924-8900 in advance. The admission fee guarantees your entrance, for the best seats come early, and if these shows are like his last one, they’ll sell out quick!

Wednesday, Feb. 17, 7:00pm: “The Bad Road: Cycling Turkey”

What do you do when you have a 3-month bicycle journey planned in Turkey and a week before you leave a war breaks out? If you are radio commentator and travel columnist Willie Weir … you go anyway. Willie will take you down some “bad roads” in this amazing country and explore the question, “How do you decide when adventure is worth the risk.”

Thursday, Feb. 18, 7:00pm: “Colombia & Venezuela: Cycling Beyond the Headlines”

Colombia has spent many years ranked as one of the most dangerous countries on the planet. Most Americans only exposure to Venezuela is from seeing President Hugo Chavez rant against American Imperialism. Most folks would leave both countries off their travel list. Not Willie Weir. He has made a habit out of seeking out the less desirable travel destinations. He spent five months pedaling around India. He cycled in South Africa right after the election of Nelson Mandela. He pedaled through Bosnia when tanks still out numbered cars. Cuba interested him solely because his government said he couldn’t go. As Willie and his wife, Kat, prepared for their journey, all the advice from every source steered them to travel only the main roads especially in Colombia. This was depressing to say the least for cyclists who delight traveling off the beaten path. It was all geared up to be a disastrous trip. Then an email popped into his inbox and the adventure took a most interesting turn…

Tribe of Levi return to SBK!

It’s official! In February, Tribe of Levi will be coming back to the Bike Kitchen for their second Second Saturday show, and this time they’ll be bringing Agustus ThElefant, Major League Spittaz (MLS), and Ras Matthew! If that lineup doesn’t bring you in, you should know you can count on us having plenty of beer on tap (from River City Brewing, no less!) and we’ll be proudly displaying the art of Jim Vetter on our walls.

MLK Jr. Inventory Day

Tomorrow is MLK Jr. Day. Since a lot of folks have the day off we decided it would be a great time to open up the shop to volunteers for cleaning up our overflowing scrap yard (formerly known as Broke Bike Mountain). The shop will be open for much of the day starting at 10am. We are still having our volunteer appreciation in the evening and an orientation at night but if you want to come get greasy before that come on in. Here are a few things that we hope to accomplish:

Create wheel sizing templates (to help find that specific size you need)
Create some signage and education materials for the shop
Strip broken bikes for useful parts
Build up mostly-complete bikes for selling/donating
Add drawer liners for the Parts Card Catalog
Strip wheels for useful hubs and axles
Develop ingenious part and bike storage systems
Win at life

So, get off your bum and be productive on MLK Jr. Day.

December couldn’t rain on our Second Saturday bash! We here at SBK would like to thank Carly DuHain, Devin Ferrin, Rachel Lomax, The Actionists, Be Brave Bold Robot, and WELL for playing with electricity a scant few feet from the the pouring rain. Thanks also to Matt Marsango for setting up some of his outstanding work. And finally, a big thanks to John at Brew It Up! for bringing and slinging some of Sacramento’s finest beer.

We also have to thank everyone who braved the weather and came out to support the shop — volunteer and visitor alike. We’re here for everyone in Sacramento, and it certainly seemed like everyone in Sacramento showed up!

Second Saturday Party: December 12, 2009

We’ve lined up an phenomenal and busy lineup for this month’s Second Saturday party. The Actionists will head the set, with WELL, Be Brave Bold Robot, Devin Farren, Carly Duhain, and Rachel Lomax each wearing holes in our concrete stage. If that’s not enough for you, we’ll be displaying some of Matt Marsango’s arresting artwork. Oh, and the crew from Brew It Up! will be here slinging some of Sacramento’s favorite suds!

The doors open at 6:00 PM, the bands will take the stage at 7:00 PM. Tell me this won’t be awesome.

AIDS/LifeCycle Information Meeting

Sometimes a cause comes along that’s more important than just keeping your local bicycle maintenance collective occupied. On Thursday, December 10, SBK will be closing its regular shop hours in order to host an information meeting about AIDS/LifeCycle 9, a 545 mile, 7 day bicycle ride sponsored by an benefiting the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center.

AIDS/LifeCycle organizers will be at the Kitchen showing an informational video about the ride and answering any and all questions you might have about the ride, the beneficiaries, the fundraising, or anything else you might want to know. They’ll also be offering a discounted registration fee if you sign up at this event.
