Acclaimed bicycle author David Herlihy will be in Davis on Friday, July 23rd to give a special presentation at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. Herlihy’s latest book, The Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance, has just been published and he will give a slideshow presentation of never-before-seen-by-the-public images relating to the book. Following the presentation, Herlihy will autograph books and the Avid Reader bookstore will have his books available at the Hall of Fame for purchase.

The presentation and book signing will run from 5:30 to 7:00 pm inside the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, at 303 3rd Street in Central Park at the corner of 3rd and B Streets in downtown Davis. This rare opportunity to meet author David Herlihy and see his presentation will be free for U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame members and just $5.00 regular admission to the Hall of Fame for other visitors. The Lost Cyclist will be available for purchase following the presentation, as well as his well-known book, The Bicycle: A History. The author will be available to sign his books that are purchased that evening.

Since space is limited for this event, those who wish to reserve a ticket to the David Herlihy event can visit the Avid Reader bookstore in downtown Davis at 617 2nd Street. The local independent bookstore is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The phone number is (530) 758-4040.

Come on down for a course on basic bicycle maintenance on Sunday, May 2nd, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM.  Learn all about getting your bike to fit you well, fixing flat tires and tubes, and get a brief introduction into how brakes and derailleurs work and how to adjust them for optimal braking and shifting!

We’ll be following this class with more courses on the first and third Sundays of the month, and we’ll be setting the classes up based on demand, so RSVP for this one or e-mail your requests to our training staff at classes@sacbikekitchen.org, and we’ll get right on it!

After living with these problems for over a year, we’re finally going to do something about it. The week starting Sunday, April 25, we’ll be closed for construction, hopefully ready to reopen for the shift on Saturday, May 1, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and with a new layout we’re sure you’ll like.

We’re still working on the behind-the scenes prep, but we’ll open the preregistration window soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to lend a hand, get a hold of our team at hunt@sacbikekitchen.org!

We’re doing things a little differently this month. After our Bike Swap on April 10, we’re throwing our normal Second Saturday party, but we’ll be donating all of the proceeds from the night to the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen’s AIDS/LifeCycle Team — 12 SBK volunteers who will ride their bicycles the 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles over 7 days. Each team member has committed to raising at least $3,000.00 each, and the team’s at over $12,000.00 already, but there’s still a long way to go.

So, we’re inviting any local artist interested in helping our team raise funds for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center by bringing in 5 pieces of art to sell and donating half of the sale price (preferably $50 or less) to our team. We have plenty of wall and counter space to show off your works, so don’t be shy. You’ll get exposure and your art will help direct some cash to a very noble cause!

I hope this note finds you well and excited for June! I wanted to invite you to our second Sacramento area meet and greet on April 6th from 6pm til 8pm. Once again the wonderful Bike Kitchen will be our hosts and it is sure to be lots of fun!

Please bring any questions you might have about the ride/logistics/fundraising/training etc. Both Tim Schneider and I will be coming from the San Francisco ALC office and we will be there to answer any of your questions and calm your nerves! We’ve featured some of Sacramento’s best rock, Americana, and hip hop at our Second Saturday parties, but this month, we wanted to bring in a sample of our town’s vibrant and innovative jazz scene.

That’s why this month, we’re proud to welcome Tyson Graf, Chris Brawley, and we’re topping it off with the debut of the all-new Joe Carlson Trio, all on our makeshift stage! And since we’re mixing up the music, we’re going to mix up our drink selections, too. We’ll have the usual beer, but OneSpeed is going to top up your glasses with some wonderful wine, and Two Rivers is kicking in some of their award winning hard cider! What more could you want?
