In case you haven’t been down to the shop recently we are busy, busy, busy. We are getting as many as 30 patrons per shift these days. As you can imagine it gets kind of hectic having so many people in and out of the shop. We have a small group around 15 dedicated aka “core” volunteers that have each committed to a shift, or the equivalent, each week. We have another group of “staff” volunteers that aren’t too interested in the organizational aspects but want to regularly lend a hand. We also have “casual” volunteers that come in every now and again to work on breaking down bikes, cleaning up, or organizing parts. Our hope is that we can get a nice rotation of the shop operations among many people. Although we welcome dedicated volunteers with open arms, we often need more casual volunteers to fill in the gaps. These folks fill in when we might be short-handed for a shift. They also end up learning a ton about bike culture, maintenance, and other volunteers.

What kind of volunteers are we looking for? As far as the shop operations go, we have three types of positions: Clerk, Mechanic, and Shift Manager.

Clerk: The clerk is responsible for greeting new patrons, introducing them to the shop, explaining the rules and about our organization, signing people into the computer, and accepting money. This position typically needs zero bike wrenching knowledge.

Mechanic: The mechanics (we try to have a few for each shift) are the talent. They help us fix our bikes. They might be asked for price checks from the clerk or Manager. They help keep the shop tidy and make sure the tools are used properly. Mechanics typically need quite a bit of bike maintenance knowledge but even if you just know the basics you can be helpful.

Shift Manager: The shift manager is responsible for opening and closing the shop, maintaining order and respect, also filling in where needed. Typically these folks are “core” volunteers and have committed to a shift per week. The shift manager needs to be able to teach a basic maintenance course.

For all of these positions we encourage anyone that is interested to just show up during our regular hours and tell the Shift Manager that you’d like to volunteer for the shift. If you dont like it, you don’t have to come back. If you do like it, just drop in again. If you absolutely love it you can commit to a regular shift.

Besides the positions listed above, there are many other positions that we need filled. Here are a few other key areas that we need help with right now.

Rosie’s Personal Assistant: Rose is our current financial guru and she is looking for a helper. This person would help Rose with some of the non-profit compliance and financials of the SBK. If you only knew how much Rose has done for us would you understand why she needs an assistant. If you would like to try-out for this position just send Rose an email. Beware: there is an obstacle course involved.

SBK Videographer/Photographer: Although we’ve been getting all kinds of press lately, we’d like to do something a bit more in-depth about what is happening at the shop. We are looking for someone that can take and edit decent video and photos during our events, rides, classes, and regular shop hours. We’d like to do short how-to videos also. You need you have your own equipment and editing system. Also, a way to digitize the results. We use flickr and if you have a pro account that would be perfect. Send Scott an email if you can help.

What perks do volunteers get? As if respect and admiration from your peers isn’t enough you get complimentary food and drinks during your shifts!* I also hear you get free bowling.+

* Subject to the generosity of grateful patrons (Oranges!) and local businesses (Thanks Pieces).
+ Capitol Bowl 4 evah

For those of you who don’t know, Doug Vincent and Danny Gutierrez are participating in the 8th annual Aids LifeCycle ride. Danny is our Kids Coordinator and we want to do all we can to help him meet his goal for this wonderful cause. Together Doug and Danny committed to raise at least $6000 for the cause. So, as part of that they’re doing a benefit show (details about the ride are at the bottom)!

8pm May 2nd, 2009 at the Kennel Club.
$5.00 minimum, with (donations of more appreciated) cover with proceeds going to the cause!

First of all, some great local bands, and good friends are playing to support us!

Splitzville – Great friends and great music

Flounder – Doug is the Bass player

Exhale – Reunion show, just for us, Danny plays Guitar

Lite Brite – Shooting a video at this concert, come get in on the footage!

Prieta – A great Sacramento band getting a lot of deserved acclaim

These are folks who have found other ways to help us out!

Asbestos Press has created a custom poster for the show, she has hand printed / hand numbered 70 posters for us to sell at the show! A very talented artist that shows at many galleries in Sacramento.

Steven Cranston at New Order Ink has donated custom screen printed t-shirts with sales to go directly to Doug and Danny’s ride (these shirts are available at this event and at SBK).

Sean Royal and Splash Promotions have also donated custom screen printed shirts with all sales going directly to the cause.

Doug and Danny will be Riding 545 Miles (San Francisco to Los Angeles) to raise money toward the fight to abolish AIDS!

On May 31-June 6, 2009, Doug and Danny are participating in the AIDS LifeCycle. It’s a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride starting in San Francisco and finishing in Los Angeles. There will be 2,498 riders joining them with their goal to help raise at least $7,500,000. Dug & Danny have committed to pull together $6,000 in donations between the two of them.

You can donate online and read more about the event.

Doug and Danny have been friends for just shy of 20 years. Ever since they met in high school they have been up to no good, until now! Rather than doing “lawn jobs” on their bikes in a pointless effort to hold on to their punk rock youth, they are going to put their angst energy towards a great cause! If only riding their bikes 545 miles was enough, they would do it over and over again for the rest of their lives, but it’s not… They need your help.

A lot of good news from our brothers and sisters to the East. The Davis Bike Church has been renamed the Davis Bike Collective. They have also secured a new location near 4th and L streets in Davis, California. Let’s show our support for them by attending their grand opening tomorrow (Sat, April 24, 2009).

Read the announcement posted to their facebook page:

The Davis Bike Collective announces its grand opening Saturday, April 24th at its new location, Bike Forth, near the intersection of 4th and L in Davis, California. All are invited to come by on Saturday between the hours of 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. to fix bikes, learn how to volunteer, make donations, or just check out the new space. The Davis Bike Collective, formerly known as the Davis Bike Church located on UC Davis campus in the Sustainable Research Area, is a all-volunteer organization dedicated to teaching people to fix their own bikes, promoting reuse of bicycle parts, and growing bike culture locally and beyond.

The Davis Bike Collective promises to continue to provide a vital service to those bicycling in Davis, one of the most bike-friendly cities in the nation. The bike tool-share and expertise available at the Bike Fourth will add to the excitement of recent enhancements to bicycling in Davis. At the new location, anyone is welcome to come by to learn about bikes or fix a bike and our volunteers can teach you a range of skills–from changing a flat to rebuilding a wheel. We will be offering memberships for those frequenting Bike Fourth, available for a day, year, month or lifetime. Along with services at Bike Forth, the Davis Bike Collective participates in numerous outreach programs in collaboration with local schools, non-profits, religious organizations and community events.

At the new location we are seeking donations of bike parts and monetary contributions to help our fledgling nonprofit grow. Bike Forth is a community-sponsored endeavor, relying on local support for its success. Those interested in helping the Davis Bike Collective through donations of funds, bicycles, or their volunteer time should come by the Bike Forth location or email bikeministry@gmail.com for more information. Our regular hours will be announced at the grand opening on Saturday. While we welcome donations of bicycles in any condition, due to space limitations we prefer durable and/or quality bicycles and parts.

Attendees

Here is who showed up for this meeting: Scott, Owen, Ryan, Ed, Gina

Agenda

Ten Commandments

Owen introduced a shop policy that seems to mostly work for everyone. To be printed out and posted in the shop and online.

Storing Project Bikes

We discussed the potential for storing project bikes at the shop while they are being worked on. We talked about potentially charging storage or rental fees. We decided that we will not allow storing bikes right now. We need to concentrate on getting the shop open and functional again. Then we will revisit the idea of storing projects.

Construction

Here are the remaining tasks that need to be completed prior to the Open House.

bars on windows and doors

close of interior door (landlord will do)

Ben came in and approved the design and will reimburse some of the costs (John G to follow up with landlord)

Window in the bathroom

plywood on the countertops? Ed to work on adding plywood

Countertops… cabinets above? Access to plugs is good, might want lighting above the countertop

Tubes and tires? Peg tree? A way to divide them out.

John G got a new door knob on the front door

Where did the ramp go? Place near the front door. John G will call Brad.

220 power? Landlord wants to remove it. Our welder folks use 110 so it is OK to remove. Landlord to remove 220 power.

Exterior lighting. Long term goal. Need to get Ben involved. Ed to take that project on.

Signage have them talk to Ben and us before doing anything

Metal cabinets? Pegboard inside the metal cabinets (buying two at Rulands).

Rolling tables (John to buy one)

Cabinets for parts.

Need receipts from Ed for his purchases (plywood and counters)

Open House

Not much progress made. Ed sent the addresses to the core. Gina will work on flyering and sending a note to the neighborhood.

Organizational

Compliance folder goes to John G, he will take to lawyer friend

Still need CC statement from John B

Still need Business Tax Cert from city

SBE seller’s permit Ryan to update the address

Do we pay sales tax? Yes, we include it in the part’s sales price. Change is hard to deal with

Owen is officially resigning and becoming less active due to his SABA responsibilities.

No receipt, no reimbursement See Rose for the reimbursement forms

Post the meeting minutes from two weeks ago? Yes. Scott will do

liability form for visitors? Download from insurer… Gina to send a copy to Scott

Longer memberships (cards?) daily ($5), yearly ($50)

Laminator? Scott to check with Chris

Business cards? Gina to look into.

Membership cards? Gina will look at a design.

Shop Activities

Whit may teach monthly

John Strizek planning on working a shift

see google doc from John G for volunteer schedule

We are set to be open: Wed, thur, fri, every 2nd saturday

volunteer coordinator? Hopefully not John G or Gina in the near future.

Contact info for volunteers or volunteer email list.

Owen will still be around to fill a shift when possible

Processes… We need the following logs in the shop:

Activity log (sign in sign out)

Donation log (who donated what, paper donation receipt) checkboxes: cash, bikes, parts, misc, other ________

Cash log

Membership log

In case you’ve been living in a deep chasm underground for the past few decades and don’t know who Steve Rex is: he is owner of Rex Cycles and one of the best custom bicycle frame builders in the US. He has a national reputation for his craftsmanship.

Steve’s crash left him with a broken hip, femur, and elbow. So far he has had two surgeries and possibly faces more in the future. Because of his injuries, Steve will be unable to work or build frames for a while. As a small business owner you can imagine how this is a great concern.

As if all of that weren’t enough, Steve’s teenage daughter received second degree burns over most of one arm and part of the other arm recently. Last we heard the doctors were still deciding if she will need skin grafts.

The Rex family are long-time residents of Sacramento and are very active in the local cycling community and in the American River Parkway Foundation. They sponsor a stretch of the trail and often go out to pick up trash themselves. They’ve been very generous to Sacramento and now it is time to give back. As a small way to help Steve and his family get through this difficult time, some of Steve’s friends are organizing a raffle in his name.

Even if you don’t ride, you probably know someone that does, and helping out is a nice thing to do!

Prize: $2,500.00 credit for merchandise or a custom frame from Rex Cycles. Proceeds in excess of $2,500.00 will go directly to the Rex Family.

Cost: $10 per ticket. Buy as many as you want.

Payments: Take a cash or check made out to Steve Rex to the shop at 1811 E Street in Sacramento.
