Compliance
Our compliance documentation is still being completed. If you have any questions please send us a message.
Financial Statements
Our financial statements will be published here. We are still working on getting this information up on the website. In the meantime please email our financial coordinator Mary with any questions.
Structure
SBK tries to be loosely structured. The current organizational structure provides three levels of participation:
Patron
Every visitor to the shop is a patron, whether they are servicing their bicycle, looking at parts, or merely in the shop on for social reasons.
Staff volunteer
Staff volunteers are any volunteers who have defined roles within the shop and/or volunteer in a reliable way to provide assistance to patrons, other volunteers, or the shop as a whole. This is not a formal group, but rather an indication of personal interest in SBK’s mission. Staff volunteers gain access to a staff e-mail list and SBK’s project management system.
Patrons performing work service in exchange for parts or membership fees are not considered staff volunteers.
Core volunteer
Originally a loosely defined and accidentally exclusive group, the Core is a subset of staff volunteers that take on special responsibilities as SBK’s policy makers and fulfill administrative duties, similar in function to other nonprofits’ Board of Directors.
Special tasks and programs
In addition to the normal shop shifts, some Core members have taken on responsibility for the following public tasks:
SBKids!
From 6:00 to 8:00 every Friday night, Doug Vincent runs a special shift at the shop for kids and families, focusing on bringing families together around human-powered transportation and giving kids 12-18 both a safe nighttime destination and a chance to get their hands dirty practicing the art of bicycle maintenance.
Public outreach
Andrea Havelaar coordinates our public outreach efforts.
Training and Education
Mel Melvin spearheads our training courses. Announcements and scheduling of classes will be posted to the front page of our website as well as to our events calendar.
Volunteer coordination
Shannon Southwood coordinates our volunteer staff, communicating with current and prospective volunteers, running orientation meetings for volunteers-to-be, and working to establish a regular volunteer schedule.
Donation reception
While we will happily accept donations during our open shifts, Mike Larmer and Paul Droubay typically organize and collect unusual donations or large donations outside of our normal business hours.
Meetings
SBK’s Core meetings are public, and are typically held at our shop on the first Monday of the month. These meetings, and any rescheduling, will be posted on SBK’s events calendar.
We have adopted the Consensus model featured here to facilitate our meetings.
Minutes from Core meetings since May, 2009 have been moved into our project management system.
