About
Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen is an organization whose goals include providing low-cost transportation, self-sufficiency through bicycle maintenance, and safety through education. Our volunteers operate a community-based bike shop in Sacramento, CA.
Mission
Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen is a community-centered bike shop run by volunteers with the focus of providing low-cost, alternative transportation for Sacramentans. By providing affordable bicycles and classes, we promote cycling as transportation and bring empowerment to members by enabling self-sufficiency through knowledge of bicycle maintenance.
History
The Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen has been a community effort since early 2006. What started out as a post to the internet forum CraigsList morphed into an an actual shop in mid 2006. After two years of solvency and building a thriving community in Oak Park, the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen moved out of the Oak Park shop to make way for the Oak Park Bicycle Kitchen and seek more (and more centralized) space. The lease for the new space in midtown was signed on Nov. 20, 2008. We are currently building out that space and hope to open asap. With luck and hard work we will be as successful with this shop as we were with the Oak Park shop.
